Chapter 1
1. If something is sacred it means that it is special for a certain reason. It could be because the owner has died and their belongings remain or that the owner was very special.
2. Jamie's mum sees Rose's room as sacred because Rose died. If Rose's room changed it wouldn't feel like her room any more so nobody is allowed in there.
3. I think in the sacred boxes are Rose's belongings. They put them there in the basement to keep them safe from flooding with plastic wrap and bags around them.
4. I think Jamie hasn't cried over Rose's death yet because he was too young to remember and doesn't understand. Later on, I think that Jamie will cry because he will then understand and remember.
Chapter 2
1. After the death of Rose, Jas changes her appearance. She changes her hair and makes it pink as bubblegum and she gets a diamond nose stud.
2. I think that Jas did this because she was Rose's twin so she looked like her. Jas didn't want to look like her any more because she had died so she changed her appearance.
Chapter 3
1. Jamie's birthday was considered disappointing because he received football shoes from his Dad that were 1 and a half sizes too small and a book from Jas that he had already read. Dad was hungover and didn't care much that it was his birthday and Mum's present hadn't arrived yet because the post was late.
2. Two days later, Jamie received a present from his mum. It was a spider man t-shirt which was special and exciting. Jamie loved this present because he likes spider man and it made him feel like a superhero and he could do anything. It was also special because it was from his mum and she said that she would see him soon.
Chapter 4
1. When Jamie says that his sister was killed by Muslims I think that it is true. Rose was killed in the terrorist attack when the Muslims dropped a bomb that went off in the area they were in.
2. On his first day I think that Jamie would have felt nervous about reading to the class when he didn’t want to, guilty about lying about Rose’s death, awkward about being new and shy because he didn’t know anyone. He also felt excited when he found that he had received a daisy chain from Daniel because everyone else had one but was angry when he found that it was just squished petals in his tray. At the end of the day I think that he would have felt happy once he realised that Sunya did not mean that he was a Muslim like her but meant that he was a superhero like her.
Chapter 5
1. When Jamie's Dad was going to empty the urn, I think that Jamie lied about his feeling for Rose because he doesn't remember her and doesn't think that his Dad will actually pour out the ashes. I think that when he 'can't wait to get rid of her' he means about how he doesn't think that she is still living and gets angry when his Dad speaks to Rose and gives her food.
2. I think that Jamie's Dad has difficulty emptying the urn because Rose is inside. If he emptied the urn of Rose's ashes, he would never see her in the urn again and she would be gone.
Chapter 6
1. I think that Sunya lied about her weekend and Jamie's sisters because she knew that Jamie's weekend was private. Sunya knows how Muslims killed Jamie's sister and might have thought that they were doing something about September 9th and how his sister died then. She decided to lie about her weekend after Jamie said nothing about his.
2. I think that Daniel put the jewellery in Jamie's PE bag. Daniel did this because he wanted Jamie to get in trouble and I think that he did it because because Jamie is new at that school and he was calling him and Sunya losers earlier.
Chapter 7
1. I think that Sunya added HELL to the chart at school. Sunya decided to pick on Daniel because she was there when he was treating Jamie badly. She had red ink on her fingers and knew how they had been calling Jamie a thief so she added hell to the chart and made it look like Daniel did it.
2. Jamie finally accepts Sunya's Blu-Tack ring because he understands how she wants to be his friend. He also doesn't think about the way his Dad would react if he saw her when he accepts her Blu-Tack ring.
Chapter 8
1. Jamie's Dad would react badly and become mad if he saw Sunya in a hijab instead of a blanket. He would have reacted this way because muslims wear hijabs and they killed his daughter. Jamie's Dad wasn't justified to be mad at Sunya because she didn't kill Rose and not all Muslims are responsible for the death of her. Only some of the Muslims killed his daughter but he still dislikes all Muslims anyway.
Chapter 9
1. Before the match that Jamie was in, he felt like he wasn't a miracle after reading a book that said that he was lucky to be him because of the small chance. After the match, Jamie felt like he was almost a miracle because he scored the winning goal and felt like he was good at something after the team cheered him on.
2. When Jamie says "... for the first time ever, my Spiderman top seemed to fit," he doesn't mean physically but mentally. He means that he felt like he had superpowers once he had scored the winning goal in the match and everyone was cheering for him.
3. When Jamie says "I have never felt more invisible. It's not a great superpower after all," he means how after he arrived home late, nobody noticed him or cared that he was late. In previous chapters, Jamie has said how if he had a superpower he would want to be invisible but after being beaten by Daniel on the way home and arriving late without people noticing or caring, he realises that it isn't that great when nobody knows that you are there or cares that you are there.
Chapter 10
1. I think that Jamie is still wearing his Spiderman T-shirt after all this time because it's from his mum. In the card his mum gave himm, she said that she can't wait to see him wearing it soon. If Jamie changes his shirt and his mum arrives, she wouldn't get to see him wearing it and might think that he doesn't like the present that she gave him. Jamie also feels like his shirt gives him superpowers and makes him feel like he can do anything and when he takes it off he feels afraid to do some things.
2. At the conclusion of the chapter, Jamie tells Sunya about how Muslims killed her sister. Jamie and Sunya laugh at this because it is very sad and laughing makes it less depressing and because Jamie is under so much pressure, laughing doesn't make him feel so bad.
Chapter 11
1. Jamie’s dad has been making changes around the house. Before Jamie goes to Sunya’s house, he asks him to go fishing and he has stopped drinking. Jamie’s dad also asked what happened at school, took them to school and made them dinner. He also says that he would have gone to Jamie’s match and speaks to Jamie and Jas at the dinner table. When Jas tells him that she has a boyfriend, he accepts that and hugs her. Jamie’s dad has been trying to include Jamie and Jas more by stopping his drinking and accepting and listening to what they have to say.
2. When Jamie goes to Sunya’s house he realises that it is not what he expected. Jamie expected Sunya’s house to be like a Muslim’s house but as soon as he stepped through the door, he noticed that her pet dog, Sammy was a regular dog. He then notices that the rooms in her house are just like his and the only difference was a painting of a place called Mecca. Jamie expected her parents to be terrorists and thought that there would be bombs in their rooms but there weren’t. The rooms were the same except they were cleaner than his house and he noticed that her parents were very nice. I think that Jamie expected their house to be like this because his mum left and he was only with his dad and Jas for a while meaning that he would hear his dad talking about Muslims and how they’re bad.
Chapter 12
1. Jamie spends a lot of time reflecting on the 10 commandments in this chapter. In class Mrs Farmer was talking about the 10 commandments and how the fifth one is one of the most important. Respect your mother and father. Jamie feels guilty about this commandment because he feels that by spending time with Sunya, he isn’t respecting his father. “Eating sandwiches with a Muslim wasn’t respecting his father.” He also spends time reflecting about one of the other commandments, do not murder. Jamie thinks about this one when Roger kills a baby rabbit and brings it to him. He tries not to break these rules because he thinks that if he does break any of the commandments, he will not make it into Heaven. Jamie wants to go to Heaven because he has been having dreams for the first time about Rose. He had dreams that Rose was alone there and didn't want her to be alone.
Chapter 13
1. In this chapter Jamie tries to give Sunya some presents because she hadn’t been speaking to him recently. Jamie tries to give her the Blu-tack ring, a crunchie bar and some flowers that were actually weeds. Sunya doesn’t react well to this and when Jamie hands her a note that asks her to go to the store room with him at recess. She doesn’t go there but when Jamie asks her again, she goes there at lunch. In the store room, Jamie tried to give her the blu-tack ring and crunchie bar. The crunchie bar had melted in his sock and had pieces of white fluff stuck in it. Sunya was upset that he didn’t say sorry and slammed the door behind her. When Jamie had picked some flowers and had gone to give them to her, he found Daniel calling her names. After he had left, Jamie showed her his present but Sunya just took them and threw them unto the ground then smeared them with her foot. Jamie was confused because Sunya was crying and he thought that she was Girl M and never cried. He then asks what she wants and she says that she wants him to say sorry. When she said this Jamie realised that he had been mean to her like when he ran away after she offered him the ring, telling her to leave him alone outside the headmaster’s office, walking off at Halloween, telling her to be quiet after the football and ignoring her after going to her house so that he could get into Heaven. Sunya doesn’t react well to this because she wants him to say sorry and doesn’t want his presents. I think that she reacts like this because he has been ignoring her and hasn’t been very nice and he should have said sorry for all of the things that he has said or done.
Chapter 14
1. When Jamie reads the ‘Britain’s Biggest Talent Show’ letter, his ‘fantasy’ is full of things that he would like to happen. He imagines himself and Jas going up on stage and their parents in the crowd holding hands because they are so proud of them. They didn’t mind that Jas had pink hair and pierced skin or that she wasn’t like Rose. Jamie’s mum broke up with Nigel and called him a bad word then she tucked him into bed like she always did.
2. Mrs Farmer behaves differently when the school inspector came to the classroom. She was wearing different clothes which were black but were so tight that her stomach was sticking out. Mrs Farmer was also speaking softly and did some stretches that helped different parts of their minds work well. They were making nativities out of clay and Mrs Farmer was calling them her dears and was being very polite. Mrs Farmer was watching the door and waiting for Mr Price to come in so that she could act polite and be kind at the right time.
Chapter 15
1. Jamie sincerely believes that his mum will turn up to Parent’s Evening but I don’t think that she will. When Jamie sees a car that looks like it has his mum inside, he runs up to it thinking that it was his mum. I didn’t think that it was his mum and it was not. Jamie’s mum will see Jamie another time because in her letter she said that she would see him soon. I think that Jamie will see his mum at the 'Britain's Biggest Talent Show' because I think that he will enter in it.
2. When Jamie’s dad is reading Jamie’s English piece about his holiday, I think that he would be angry and sad. His dad would be angry at him about lying about Rose and his mum. I think that he will start yelling at him in the classroom or on the way home. Jamie’s dad would be sad because it said how Rose was alive but if she was she would be Jasmine’s age and some things that have happened wouldn't have happened. This means that Jamie’s dad would be upset because she would not be like Jas and would still be alive. His mum also wouldn't have walked out and he wouldn't be drinking any more because he wouldn't be sad about her death.
3. I predict that when Jamie’s dad meets Sunya and her mother, he will react badly. After seeing how Jamie had lied about Rose, his mum and to Mrs Farmer, he will be so angry that he might start yelling at Jamie about how he had been speaking to a Muslim. Jamie’s dad might even start yelling at Mrs Farmer because there was a Muslim in his class and at the school. He also might start to yell at Sunya and her mum when they enter the classroom.
Chapter 16
1. When Jamie’s dad is accusing Jamie of not loving Rose and yelling at him, I felt really sorry for him. I felt sorry for him because his dad is being really unfair because Jamie was really young when Rose died and wouldn’t remember her. Jamie’s dad also doesn’t know what is happening to Jamie at school. He’s being really unfair because Sunya and her mother aren’t terrorists and not all Muslims are. It isn’t fair that Jamie’s dad accuses Jamie for not loving Rose because he’s friends with Sunya and Sunya didn’t do anything to hurt Rose. Jamie’s dad is being unfair to Jamie but some Muslims did kill his daughter so there is a reason that he is acting like this.
Chapter 17
1. On Christmas Eve, Jamie makes a card for Sunya. In this card he said what he couldn’t say to her in person. He wrote thank you and told her the plan about Britain’s Biggest Talent Show and how it would bring his family back together. There were snowmen that looked like himself and her and then he put lots of glitter on it and said that it was from Spiderman. At 11 o’ clock at night, Jamie checked that Jas was asleep and then went to deliver it to Sunya. When he arrived at her house it was midnight and he started to throw rocks at the window to get her attention. He hit the window but it was her dad’s so he hid in a bush. His card had become wet because of the snow and when she did come out she said that he had to leave because she wasn’t allowed to be friends with him because her mum said that he was bad luck. This chapter ends terribly because he throws a large rock at her parent’s window, his card becomes wet and when Sunya did come out, she said that they weren’t allowed to be friends. They weren’t allowed to be friends because on Parent’s Evening, Jamie’s Dad yelled at her mum and said that Muslims killed his daughter and that it wasn’t their country.
Chapter 18
1. Annabel Pitcher shows tension between Jamie and Jas when waiting for her audition in many ways. She shows tension when they speak to each other and are having negative thoughts such as when Jas was yelling at Jamie about how it’s hopeless and how they have been abandoned by their mum. Tension is also showed through Jas becoming nervous and her leg twitching as well as her dress which was flowery and she had died her hair brown. The lady with the clipboard also calls out the audition numbers (106, 107, 108 and 109). Jas’ number was 113 and this showed tension because they were having negative thoughts and their audition was almost on. At the end of the chapter they don't end up doing the audition because Jas leaves.
Chapter 19
1. If something is sacred it means that it is very special. It may be special because the owner has passed away and it is some of their last belongings. If it is sacred it means that it should remain untouched because it’s very special and changing it would be changing the belongings of someone that has passed away, meaning that you can’t change it back to the way that they had it.
2. No, I can’t relate Jas’ audition to anything that I have seen before. This is because I have never seen a judge tell someone that they are great and the person on stage with them is not. However, I have felt nervous, like Jas, when presenting in front of the class before.
If I was in Jas’ position when she says that “Families should stick together,” I think that I would have done the same. I would not go to the next round if it meant that I had to go there alone and leave my sibling behind.
3. When Jamie finally meets his mum, he is very excited when he sees her in the rows of seats in the theatre. However, when Jamie actually meets his mum again, he finds that she has changed and had changed her hair, dyed part of it blonde and cut it short. She also isn’t as excited to see them as Jaime thought she would be. “Mum was tanned. Her eyes were surrounded by all these wrinkles I hadn’t seen before. And she’d cut off her hair. There were a few grey bits near her temples and some blonde streaks on top.” “She’s shrunk I thought, which was stupid, but that was how it felt. We had contact for less than two seconds. I wanted the hug to be perfect, but it was cold and hard and made me think of jigsaw pieces that don’t fit together, no matter how hard you push,” Jamie finds that she has changed and meeting her wasn’t what he expected. At the end of the chapter, when Jamie says that he will come with you when he thinks that his mum will be coming back to the cottage, he would have been disappointed when his mum says that she is going to go back to London. Jamie would have been heartbroken “The t-shirt I began, my eyes on a puddle on the pavement. Oh yes Mum said. I meant to say. She smiled. It’s brilliant. And I smiled back, despite everything. She rubbed the material between her thumb and finger. It’s a lovely top. Where did you get it from? It really does suit you, James,” Jamie receives this present from his mum and in the card with it, it said that she couldn’t wait to see him wearing it soon.
4. In this chapter we also find out that Jamie’s mum did not give him the Spiderman T-shirt. Instead, I think that it was Jas who gave it to him. I think that Jas gave it to him because she didn’t want Jamie to forget about mum or think that she had forgotten or given up on them. She also didn’t want Jamie to think that the present from his mum hadn’t arrived yet because she could see that he was upset about her present not arriving yet.
Chapter 20
1. I think that Jamie thought about earthquakes on the way home from the contest because his world started to crumble down like an earthquake. After the contest he asked his mum about his shirt because she had given it to him. When he asked her, she said that it was nice and asked her where he had gotten it. Jamie then realises that his mum didn’t care about them and all of the excuses he made for her, Jamie realises aren’t true. When Jamie sends her a letter asking her to come to Parent’s Evening, he says that Mr Walker will make her work and that’s why she didn’t come. However, Jamie’s mum had actually gone to Egypt with Nigel and had quit her job months ago. All of the letters Jamie and Jas had sent to their mum, Jamie’s mum didn’t care about and did not receive. When Jamie gets home and goes to bed, he wakes up and realises that Roger has gone missing. When he finds him, he finds that Roger was hit by a car. This is why Jamie thinks about earthquakes on the way home, in an earthquake, everything crumbles down, just like his world.
Chapter 21
1. When Jamie’s dad empties Rose’s ashes when helping Jamie bury Roger, Jamie states that it was not all bad. I think that he thinks this because Roger has brought the family closer even though their mum had left them. When Roger died, Jamie’s dad says that he likes Jas’ hair and should keep it pink. Jamie’s dad had accepted that Jas didn’t look like Rose and let her go. They all had something in common and had all lost someone they love. Jamie finally realises why his dad kept the urn on the mantelpiece and why he gave her food and Christmas stockings because he wanted Roger on the mantelpiece so that he could do the same for Roger. He realises that even when someone has died, you don’t have to stop loving them.
2. Roger’s death is the catalyst for healing for Jamie and his father because he brought them closer together. For the first time, Jamie’s dad hugs him, he also makes him a hot chocolate. When Roger dies, they both have lost someone they love, Roger and Rose. His father was also able to empty Rose’s ashes and Jamie understands why he has kept her ashes for so long. Jamie’s dad tells him that Roger has died, and what was there is gone. Their family is closer together now because of the death of Roger. Jamie’s dad accepts that Jas does not look like Rose anymore because Rose is gone. The urn is no longer on the mantelpiece and is kept inside Jamie's dad's room so that he can look at it on September 9th.
Chapter 22
1. I think that the ‘dog in Jamie’s chest’ is his emotions. When he was angry that Daniel was bullying Sunya, the dog was growling and when he is happy, the dog wags its tail. It also says that when he is sad, the dog’s tail is droopy. The ‘dog in Jamie’s chest’ may also be his conscience. It shares his emotions and thinks what he thinks. When Jamie was mad, the dog was mad and started growling.
2. Jamie stands up to Daniel once and for all by beating him up badly. When Daniel starts to bully Sunya, ‘the dog in Jamie’s chest’ begins to growl. Then when Daniel is about to pull off Sunya’s hijab, Jamie’s heart begins to roar. Jamie screams at Daniel to stop and punches him in the face really hard. Then Daniel falls to the ground, Jamie kicks him. This was not the best way to respond to the way Daniel was treating Sunya. However, because Daniel had beaten Jamie up a lot and was about to pull off Sunya’s hijab, it was reasonable. Sunya said that no one is allowed to see their hair in her family so it was bad that Daniel had tried to pull off her hijab.
Chapter 23
1. In the final chapter, several glimmers of hope for the future are given. Jamie and Jas’ dad has started to work again and drinks less. Jamie understands that he is just sad about the death of his daughter and isn’t angry at him about what he did for the urn. Jas and Jamie both have their secrets. Leo and Jas see each other even though Jas’ dad didn’t want Leo in the house again seeing his daughter. Jamie and Sunya have become friends again even though Jamie’s dad doesn’t like Muslims. When they are driving their dad doesn’t yell at Sunya or become angry when he see her and he asks about their day after school. After school, Jamie buys a teddy for Jas. It is a replacement for Burt who Jas lost on a train and loved because he had no eyes. The man who lives near Jamie says that he can come over and walk his dog Fred. This will help Jamie feel better about the death of Roger. In the final chapter the family is sitting down together and Jamie says that he knew what grade his family would get, satisfactory. In earlier chapters he thougt that his family was terrible and they would not have passed, but in the end he realises that his family is okay even though their mum walked out on them.
Chapter 5
Chapter 8

Chapter 10
Chapter 13
Chapter 14
